The challenge
What we found
A two-level backyard: capped composite decking filmed with pollen and mildew, a paver patio stained by grill grease and leaf tannin, and railings green on the shaded side. The deck boards were slick enough that the owners had stopped letting the kids out in wet weather.
The deadline was real — a birthday cookout in five days — and the owners were debating replacing boards they assumed were permanently stained.
Constraints
- Capped composite: pressure must stay under manufacturer limits
- Grease saturation near the grill zone on porous pavers
- Fixed deadline: entertaining-ready in under a week
The approach
How we cleaned it
Deck boards got a low-pressure wash with the grain plus a composite-safe detergent — no closer than twelve inches, always moving. The patio got a degreaser dwell on the grill zone, then an even surface-cleaner pass. Railings, steps, and skirting were hand-detailed to match, and everything was rinsed twice with furniture reset the same day.
Deliverables
- Deck wash, patio degrease and clean, railing detail
- Furniture moved, reset, and wiped down
- Cookout-ready sign-off two days ahead of the party
The result
Party-ready, nothing replaced
Outcome
The “permanently stained” boards cleaned up to their original tone — no replacement needed. Grip returned immediately once the biofilm was gone, the grill-zone grease lifted out of the pavers, and the whole backyard photographed like a listing the night of the cookout.
The owners now run a yearly pre-summer deck service with us.
